Parent's weekend began with a tour of the equine facilities at the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena, north of the UofA Fayetteville campus, and a tour of the UofA sheep farm and the Red Meat Abattoir.
Block and Bridle Club members served a steak lunch in the atrium of the AFLS building, on the campus, where they were joined by several faculty members from the Animal Science Department. Parents said they enjoyed the opportunity to 'put names with faces'. The group then visited Savoy, where they toured the physiology farm and saw the cannulated cattle housed there for research. The group also toured the Swine Unit and Beef Research Facility.
The day's events concluded back at the arena with the 1st annual University of Arkansas Little International Sheep Showmanship contest, which was judged by Marcia Dalton, who is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and employed by Tyson Foods, Inc. Students showed lambs in Novice and Experienced Divisions. Senior Ashley Campbell was awarded Champion Novice Showman honors. Sophomore Crystal Ahrens was named Champion Experienced Showman. The B&B Club hopes to expand on the event in future years, and declared their 1st annual event a success.
Advisors for the University of Arkansas Block & Bridle Club are Beth Kegley, Ph.D. and Janeal Yancey, Ph.D.
